This so-so Netflix offering is not exactly going to get the animation brainiacs at Pixar quaking in their boots but it might just be enough for youngsters looking for something new. This time around Marmaduke is eyed as a potential dog show winner, if only he could be properly trained. Headline-grabbing comedian Pete Davison voices the giant - and very clumsy - Great Dane in this latest incarnation of the famous comic strip (the last was in 2010).

With them, though, it’s a masterclass from two heavyweights in how to inject relish and humour into a story, creating a charming drama full of dastardly deeds and cheeky oneupmanship. Without them, this story of OAP con-artists would be a faintly ridiculous tale of bitter revenge. Twist-packed romps like this live and die on their credibility so when you’ve got acting legends Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian McKellen on board you know that however outlandish the plot, you’ve got the best leads to make it believable.

And it’s the same thing if you’re watching Cobra Kai and haven’t seen The Karate Kid in ages. If you’re watching Cobra Kai and haven’t ever seen The Karate Kid, the movie is essential viewing. That said, the movie pulls perfectly at every heartstring, making you root for the good guys and boo the baddies, and the chemistry is just great, particularly between Macchio and Morita, Zabka and Kove, and Shue and both Macchio and Zabka. Plus, Ali (Elisabeth Shue) is way too good for either Daniel or Johnny. The bullies here belong in jail, and the cops, school boards, Veterans Administration, and/or child services would never tolerate the boorish, borderline sadistic behavior of the chief villain, John Kreese (Martin Kove). We’re not convinced that Daniel’s signature move, the iconic crane kick, would ever actually work, or that Daniel, after taking a brutal beating, could even summon the strength to stand, much less pull it off. The movie is pure cheese, which is half its appeal. And the same cinematographer, James Crabe, shot Rocky and The Karate Kid. And if the rousing score seems to evoke Rocky, too, that also makes sense, since Bill Conti wrote the music for both films.
Miyagi, and Burgess Meredith, who played Mickey, were nominated for Oscars in the Best Supporting Actor category. It’s worth noting that Pat Morita, who played Mr. That makes perfect sensei… er sense, since Avildsen directed Rocky. Avildsen, The Karate Kid is basically Rocky for teenagers.
